Friends That God Gives Us

Rev. Joel Rodríguez  March 09 2026

Devotional #3

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.

Proverbs 17:17

Reflection:

There are certain friendships that become stories worthy of a movie. They are relationships that time cannot erase, because they are born in the simple moments of life and sustained by something deeper than proximity: they are sustained by love, respect, and faithfulness.

Sometimes life allows us to choose a family beyond blood. These are friends who, over the years, become brothers and sisters of life. People we care for intentionally, with whom we learn to respect one another and also to overcome our differences through dialogue and patience.

That is how it was with my best friend since the beginning of high school. In those days we were dreamers. We would sit and talk for hours, imagining what life would be like when we became adults. Neither of us had any idea what the future truly had in store.

Yet God was there.God was always present in our friendship as a silent witness.

Life eventually took us down different paths, but when we met again after many years, we understood something profound: God does not often allow friendships like this. Some of them last a lifetime.

When I returned to Honduras with my family, it was beautiful to meet again with my brother in life. The embrace we shared told our whole story without a single word. In that brief but heartfelt hug we remembered who we had been… and celebrated who we had become.

Yes, we never stopped being dreamers.

Even in moments of uncertainty, friends are like water that quenches the loneliness that can live within our souls. And in that mystery of human friendship, God is present.

So let us care for our friendships.Sometimes, through them, God sustains us.

Questions for Reflection

  1. What friendships in my life have been a gift from God?

  2. In what ways am I caring for and nurturing those relationships today?

  3. How can I be a faithful friend to others during their difficult times?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for the friends you have placed in my life.Thank you for those who have walked with me in moments of joy and also in times of difficulty.

Teach us to care for our friendships with love, respect, and faithfulness.Help us recognize your presence in sincere embraces, in meaningful conversations, and in the companionship that comforts our souls.

Amen.
